OUR MISSION
Our desire is to provide emergency disaster assistance to those in need in Sri Lanka as well as provide and promote long term support services designed to improve the livelihood of those living in poverty. Our goal is to provide opportunity for the individuals that are served by our programs and that these individuals will become more self sufficient as a result of our support. Through our assistance, we hope to be a catalyst in transforming the lives of those we touch with our programs.
Whether it is responding to a natural disaster, assisting those suffering from poverty or providing support services to those in need, our goal is the same - we want to help. And, more importantly, we want to make a difference in the lives of those we help. Hopefully, our assistance will generate long term benefits to the recipients improving their livelihood and making them more self sufficient.
OUR HISTORY
We have been providing emergency and long term support services designed to improve the livelihood of those in need in Sri Lanka for over 15 years.
Operating as a program of Volunteers of America of Los Angeles, we began providing assistance to those affected by the tsunami that devastated Sri Lanka in 2004. Immediately after the tsunami, we provided emergency assistance to those in need in all areas of the country. Over the years, we continued to provide long term support services to individuals in areas affected by the tsunami, concentrating in efforts to improve the livelihood of families in these areas. We have provided assistance to schools and other educational programs, built libraries, assisted with housing development and, in particular, have focused on microfinance programs designed to allow families to improve their living standards and escape from poverty.
In early 2017, the responsibility for work being done in Sri Lanka was transferred to a newly created non-profit organization, the Sri Lanka Relief Fund of America. This new organization was established to specialize in relief work in Sri Lanka and to continue and expand on the work that was being done.
HOW WE OPERATE
We are very passionate about our work. We want to make sure that we help as many people as possible and want to maximize the impact of funds spent. We try to keep operating costs to a minimum. There are no payroll costs - all time spent on work performed is performed on a volunteer basis. You can rest assured that any funds donated to our organization will be used as efficiently as possible to maximize the benefits to those in need in Sri Lanka.
